Happy Global Champagne Day! If you ever needed an excuse to open a bottle of Champagne (as if!), then this is it. Today marks this 11th annual celebration which began in 2009 to honour this world-changing region and drink.
As one of SA’s biggest Champagne fans we pride ourselves on our extensive Champagne range including everything from the leading Champagne houses to the exciting category of Grower Champagnes. But, what would this day be if we didn’t mention one of the leading modern Champagne houses, Jacquesson.
Founded in 1798, Jacquesson is known for its innovation. One of their inventions, widely used today, is that of the wire cage to replace the string, as well as the metal plate to prevent the thread from sinking into the cork. Their revolutionary herbicide-free, terroir-based philosophy has changed the face of Champagne. They also caused quite a stir after retiring their non-vintage blend, after 150 years, to replace it with single-vintage-based cuvées. Many may not know that Jacquesson also gave birth to Krug.
While we could go on about Champagne all day, we’ll leave you to appreciate this day yourself with a few of our favourtie Champagnes:
